Vanguard's Restoration

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

Vanguard's Restoration is the System-governed process by which the dormant Vanguard begins to exist again as an active adventurer guild. Its decisive first stage is completed when Vivisari Vexaria opens membership beyond the Party of Heroes and inducts Miraelle, transforming a century-old legend from a closed remnant into a recruitable organization. The quest does not merely restore a building: it reconnects people, signatures, rank, laboratories, vaults, and inherited treasure to a guild structure whose future remains only partly revealed.

Definition and Historical Setting

Vanguard had previously admitted only the Party of Heroes as adventuring members. That restriction made the guild less a functioning institution than a preserved monument to the group that had defeated the seventh and final Cataclysm at great cost, with all but the Sorceress perishing in the fight. A hundred years later, the Party's victory was publicly commemorated during Peace Day, while the wider world treated its surviving legend as part of the sacred history of survival from the Cataclysms.

Vanguard's Restoration therefore operates across two timescales. In public memory, Vanguard belongs to the heroic past; within the System, it remains a structure capable of being upgraded, reopened, and made operational. The contrast resembles the guild architecture itself: its exterior can remain fixed while its interior expands according to tier. The same translation of game logic into reality governs the restoration quest, making institutional renewal a matter of satisfying formal requirements rather than relying on reputation alone.

First-Stage Requirements and Completion

The immediate requirement for the first stage is the induction of Miraelle, a former craftsman who has become an adventurer. Rafael identifies the process as straightforward once recruitment is opened, and Vivisari Vexaria confirms that new members are welcome. Miraelle's admission is significant because she is the first new member of Vanguard after the Party of Heroes. Her signature converts the possibility of broader recruitment into a concrete institutional act.

Vivisari Vexaria must also sign the guild documentation as Vivisari. The act unsettles her for a specific reason: she has never signed in that identity and wonders whether the anti-forgery enchantment will recognize her handwriting as belonging to the Sorceress. The System validates the signature. At that instant, the quest document ignites in golden fire, filling the room with heat and brilliant light before vanishing without ashes or scorch marks. The magical disappearance is not decorative confirmation; it is the System's irreversible acknowledgment that the first restoration condition has been met.

Rafael then confirms the practical result. Vanguard has become a tier-one guild, and its craftsmen's quarters should be accessible, along with at least part of the vault. The quest thus translates recruitment into rank, and rank into material access. Miraelle responds not by pursuing the most spectacular treasure but by rushing to recover her laboratory, revealing that restoration is valuable to her as a return of skilled work and not only as the reopening of legendary wealth.

Guildhall, Laboratory, and Vault

The restored guildhall is larger inside than outside, a property explained by the guild-tier system. In the world of Seven Cataclysms, upgrading a guild expanded its interior without requiring a larger exterior plot, allowing many guilds to occupy a limited district. Poorer guilds relied on instanced versions, while the richest possessed permanent real estate; inactivity could still result in eviction. Vanguard's translated form preserves this logic, so the reopened institution is simultaneously a physical headquarters and a System-mediated space.

The first-stage completion also changes the status of the vault. As a regular tier-zero guild, Vanguard should not have possessed an accessible vault at all, and the door handle had refused to move when Vivisari Vexaria tried it previously. After the quest completes, the door opens onto the hoard collected by the strongest adventuring party in history. The chamber is large, brightly lit by silver walls, and crowded with shelves, boxes, cabinets, stands, and other containers holding an overwhelming variety of objects. The scene makes the restoration tangible: the guild's past is no longer merely commemorated in stories or images but placed within reach behind a door that the System has finally permitted to open.

The Convoy and its power infrastructure provide a related image of institutional continuity. The armored train is built to cross thousands of miles of monster-infested territory, with magical artillery turrets stationed along its cars. Its engine compartment contains eight slots lined with artificing marks; when Saffra places two inert power cores near the compartment, an invisible force pulls them into position, and the train shudders as the cores turn white and release mana through the Convoy. These mechanisms reinforce the restoration quest's larger pattern: dormant structures become active only when people, artifacts, and System-defined interfaces are correctly connected.

Unresolved Progression

The first stage does not reveal the whole quest line. After leaving the vault, Vivisari Vexaria notices that no second mythic-tier quest for Vanguard's Restoration has appeared on the quest board. Logic suggests that another stage should exist, but the delay leaves open whether a hidden requirement remains or whether the System will reveal the next step only later. The restored guild is therefore neither complete nor simply returned to its former state. It occupies an intermediate condition: active enough to admit members, reopen workspaces, and unlock treasure, but still waiting for the next instruction.

That uncertainty gives the quest line its forward pressure. The completed objective supplies proof that Vanguard can be restored, while the absent second quest withholds the terms of its full revival. Vivisari Vexaria must check the board regularly, turning institutional reconstruction into an ongoing negotiation with a system that grants access incrementally rather than explaining its entire design.

Narrative and Thematic Significance

Vanguard's Restoration converts heroic memory into present-tense responsibility. The Party of Heroes remains central to the guild's identity, but the first stage rejects the idea that Vanguard must remain their private monument. By opening recruitment and welcoming Miraelle, Vivisari Vexaria allows the guild's meaning to pass from a finished generation into a new one.

The quest also exposes the tension between legend and administration. Vivisari Vexaria's return can be interpreted by witnesses as something nearly divine, especially after her overwhelming defeat of otherworldly threats; yet the restoration of her old guild depends on forms, signatures, ranks, doors, and quest conditions. The same figure who is mistaken for a descending god must still satisfy the System's bureaucratic threshold. Vanguard survives through both mythic aura and mundane procedure.

Finally, the restored vault and Miraelle's recovered laboratory establish two competing but complementary uses for the past. The vault preserves the dangerous abundance of the Party of Heroes' achievements, while the laboratory allows a living craftsperson to resume productive work. Restoration is consequently not simple nostalgia. It is the reactivation of an inheritance, with all the risks of opening sealed power and all the promise of giving that inheritance a future.
